Short description: The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the principles of rational proceeding of the veterinary surgeon in situations of public health danger, caused by natural disasters, radiological contamination (of the environment, fodder, animals and food) and bio-terror or agri-terror attacks.
Full description: Application of biological agents in the terrorist attacks – their properties, history of the use and methods of dissemination. Influence of biological agents on people and animals. Agricultural terrorism, threats for the food industry. Diagnostics of biological agents used as terrorist weapon. The influence of ionizing radiation on biological material. Behaviour of radioisotopes in the environment. The ways of contamination and radionuclides distribution in organism. Metabolism of selected radionuclides. Tasks of veterinary services in radiation protection of Poland and Europe. Dosimetry and evaluation of fodders and animal products contamination. Decontamination and methods for of external and internal pollutions elimination.

Learning outcomes: Knowledge: - define the basic terms in range of radiobiology - describe harmful influence and consequences of irradiation - knows the rules of operation of the state veterinary service, its public health protection aspects included Skills: - recognize the sources of radiological danger - essess the consequences of radiological contamination of people, animals, plants and environment - recognize biological factors used in bioterrorism Social competences: - cooperate with units of Polish Atomic Agency (PAA) and government units in range of prevention and elimination of radiological disasters - cooperate with government units in range of prevention and elimination of biological disasters
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: Final grade: grade obtained from labs – credit.
